Updates on the Federal Vision in the Presbyterian Church in America

May 2011

This weekend the Pacific Northwest Presbytery of the PCA has scheduled the "trial" of Federal Visionist Peter Leithart for June 3-4, 2011, just prior to the PCA’s General Assembly. This presbytery has already stated that Leithart doesn’t teach anything out of accord with the Westminster Standards. Leithart teaches at Doug Wilson’s New Saint Andrews College and pastors Trinity Reformed Church in Moscow, Idaho – a church in the Confederation of Reformed Evangelical Churches (CREC).

Update: In an email sent out to all its members the Northwest Presbytery made the following announcement about the trial of Leithart:

And as mentioned before, we will be in Executive Session, so the contents of the proceedings may not be shared, personally or electronically, with those who are not members of our Presbytery, either during or after the trial, and may only be discussed with members of our Presbytery who were present in the Executive Session. Once Presbytery acts on the Commission’s findings (in October), those findings and Presbytery's decision will become a matter of public record. We wonder why our nation's government is corrupt with all of its lack of transparency and all of its secret meetings; our nation's government is following the church -- as the church goes so goes the nation. Though this is called a trial, it is being carried out behind closed doors, with no light from the press, nor is anything going to be made public until October. "For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light" (Mark 4:22). "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops" (Luke 12:1c-3). "Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest may also fear" (1 Timothy 5:20).

Meanwhile the Federal Vision is alive and well in the Missouri Presbytery, where Jeffrey Meyers has been exonerated by that presbytery, despite a Letter of Concern that clearly showed (from Meyers’ own words) that Meyers does in fact teach Federal Vision theology.

It remains to be seen whether the PCA will rid itself of the leaven of the Federal Vision.
